Allergy Eye Problems
In the Willamette Valley, eye allergies affect a large percentage of the population. Typically, most people deal with seasonal allergies that start in the springtime and progress through the summer months. This is, in large part, due to the very high amounts of pollen in the air. Typically symptoms of eye allergies include itching, redness, watery eyes and puffy or swollen eyelids.
When exposed to pollen or other allergens, the eyes typically itch first. When the eyes itch, we have a tendency to want to rub them. This not only affects your ability to see clearly, but also triggers the release of more histamines (substances in the body that lead to itchy and red eyes) and this eventually leads to the enlargement of blood vessels of the eyes and swelling of the lids. In order to stop the allergy eye process, it’s important to take a preventative approach. Our doctors regularly prescribe allergy medications for the eyes that prevent the allergy cycle from occurring, thus giving you much more comfortable eyes and better vision.
